The career day places Bell with 1,648 rushing yards on the season. While Bell enjoyed the news he also stressed there is more to the game than personal gains.
"It's a great accomplishment for me," said Bell. "But at the end of the day it's a total team effort. I can't do it without the offensive line, receivers against the safeties, (Andrew) Maxwell making the right choice at the line of scrimmage, and of course the coaches calling the plays and putting trust in me. It's a total team effort."
The effort was not lost on Spartans quarterback Andrew Maxwell.
"It was the best game I think I've ever seen him play," said Maxwell. "He did everything that was asked of him. What we asked him to do was really carry the ball and pound the rock and take some time off the clock. He had the hot hand, and the offensive line was physically dominant up front. You've got to go with what's working."
But all was not easy for the Spartans as they continued to struggle at times offensively keeping Minnesota in the game despite multiple turnovers by the Gophers. However, this game the ball seemed to bounce more for the Spartans than at any time this season giving Mark Dantonio a flashback moment.
"I had a flashback," said Dantonio about Bennie Fowler's tipped reception for a touchdown. "That's one of the things that happened in '09 up here, was a tipped pass for a touchdown. You make your own breaks. I thought that Bennie having the awareness and the alertness to be able to handle that, that's part of it. That's part of his ability."
The win gives the Spartans the much needed sixth win on the season with many projecting that a trip to Tempe, Arizona is ahead for the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl where they'll face a team from the Big 12 on December 29th.
