Spartans Make Solid Impression

Thursday was a big day for Dayton (Ohio) Thurgood Marshall two-way standout Vayante Copeland as he received the news he dreamed of. SpartanDigest.com caught up with Copeland following track practice.

Michigan State has always been strong in their recruiting in Southwest Ohio. Now, the Spartans have another top target on their radar in Dayton (Ohio) Thurgood Marshall athlete Vayante Copeland.

"I spoke with Michigan State today," said Copeland. "Michigan State offered me today and I'm real excited about getting up there to visit them in the spring."

Copeland looks to be a big target for Mark Dantonio and his staff as he's spoken with the Spartans head coach already.

"I spoke with Coach Dantonio last week," said Copeland. "I like him a lot and we talked about how I need to get up there to visit and who I'm picking to win the Super Bowl (Ravens). I spoke with Coach (Harlon) Barnett today and he said Coach Dantonio liked my film and that he watched all 13 minutes of my film until the end. He also said he really liked me as a person and student."

While Copeland knows its early in the recruiting process he's also heard great things about the Spartans program from others in the area.

"Coach Barnett talked with me about coming up in March when they have spring practice," explained Copeland. "However, I'm going to get in touch with him and see if I can get up there before that."

Copeland, who stands 5-foot-11, 180-pounds excelled on both sides of the ball this past season as he helped Thurgood Marshall to a 12-2 record as a cornerback and running back. On the season he rushed for 1,707 yards and 19 touchdowns. Early projections have Copeland as one of Ohio's top defensive back prospects for the 2014 recruiting class.
