AN OVERLOOKED GEM FROM STREETSBORO
Streetsboro's Tony Smith
NE Ohio Director
Posted Jan 6, 2004
OhioPrepScene.com is always on the lookout for the hidden GEMS of Ohio High School sports. This one is real special.
After receiving film on Streetsboro High School's RB/DB
, I was shocked at what limited attention this special athlete has earned. Tony can flat out play! He's big, fast and athletic. One of the best combinations of any player I have seen this season. As a running back, Tony ran with great quickness and vision, but showed me that he knows how to finish a run and gain those extra yards. As a defensive back, he was quick to get to the ball carrier, didn't miss a tackle and showed great cover skills. After watching the film, I then talked to Tony for more information on his recruiting, the past football season and other information.
How did your season go?
"It went fairly well. I had an injury early in the season and was forced to miss one game and play receiver for three games, so I never really got into the flow of the season."
What were some of the highs and lows of your season
"I had a game where I ran for 200 yards on 13 carries and 3 TD's and also when I earned 1st Team All Conference as a Defensive Back. I would have to say getting injured in the 2nd game was my low point, because I could have had a great statistical season."
Who was the toughest team and opponent you went up against this year?
"Mogadore was the toughest team. I would say
from Windham was pretty good, but I didn't play that game."
What position(s) did you play and what were your final stats?
"I played RB/CB/SS. I did well at receiver; I had 26 receptions for 403 yards and 2 TD's. Then when I returned to running back I managed 647yards on 97 attempts. I had 47 tackles 6 TFL at cornerback and strong safety, but did not have many opportunities for interceptions (Did not throw my way)."
What camps did you attend this summer and which one benefited the most?
University, Ohio State University,
. I would say they all had their upside, but I would have to say Ohio State because I got a lot of looks from coaches."
What school(s) do you plan or visiting or have you visited?
"Kent State on January 16th,
on the 23rd, and Buffalo (if I decide to go) on the 30th."
Do you have a leader at this point?
"No, not as of right now."
Are you involved in any other sports in High School?
"I played Basketball for 3 seasons before taking this year off to focus on training for football."
What do you want to major in at the college you choose?
"Physical education focusing in on Exercise Science."
Any special thanks to anyone or any other information you would like to share?
"I would like to thank you for taking the time take a look at me and my info."
I would like to wish Tony and his family the best of luck in the future and a special thanks to Tony's father for sending game tape. Some school is going to find a gem when Tony gets on campus next season!
