I bet you thought it was football season right? Well, yes and no, it is also fall basketball season, and the trek toward the winter season has already begun

This weekend, Ohio Youth Basketball (OYB) staged the first of six fall basketball tournaments in Delaware.  This fall, OYB will hold tournaments in the following Central Ohio communities: Delaware, Whitehall, Grove City, Newark, Columbus and Worthington.

Although Gary Lacrone's organization has been hosting spring and summer basketball tournaments for several years, this is only the second year OYB has been hosting fall tournaments. Despite the fact that these tournaments don't draw anywhere close to the number of teams as they do in the spring and summer (an average of about 80 teams per tournament), the fall tournaments give the die hard player, coach and parent the opportunity to continue to play, coach and observe quality basketball close to home.

Despite the fact that OYB tournaments tend to draw a majority of their teams from the Central Ohio area, more and more teams are coming from surrounding states including Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Coaches enter their teams in fall tournaments for a number of reasons, but most coaches, like Chris Joseph, head varsity girls coach for Worthington Christian High School, and F.I.S.T., an 8th grade travel team in Central Ohio, because "fall tournaments help kids prepare for tryouts with their school teams,   while encouraging players to prepare, by working on shooting and other parts of their game during the week leading up to the weekend tournaments.

Although the Delaware tournament only drew a total of 13 teams in 3 age divisions (5/6. 7/8 & 9.10 grades), competitive basketball was alive and well in September. In the 5th/6th grade division, the Columbus Basketball Club finished 4-0 for the tournament.  In this division, the top players included: Stevie Taylor, Cody Smith & Doug Thorpe from CBC, and Brooke Turson from Mid-Ohio Magic.

In the 7th/8th grade division, F.I.S.T. took home 1st place honors despite a serious challenge from a 7th grade All-Ohio squad.  Top players included: Colin Rockhold, Kyle Corbin and Tyler Joseph for F.I.S.T., and Nehemiah Trotter and Ryan Cosgray for All-Ohio. In the 9th/10th grade division, Tom Cole's Central Ohio Knights defeated the Spirit Warriors to claim the tournament title.  Top players included: Evan Washington (Reynoldsburg) and Troy Cherry (Columbus Beechcroft).

If you are a basketball junkie with a hunger for competitive basketball during the heart of football season, head to Columbus to get your hoops fix, and continue to watch OhioPrepScene.com for coverage of the remaining 5 OYB fall tournaments.
